Share
Here is the final article in the “How to Keep a Pretty Journal Without Drawing” series. In this one, I'll show you how to incorporate your paints, colored pencils, and other mediums—even if you’re a beginner. You’ll discover simple and quick tips to make your pages more aesthetic.
Adding Color to Your Journal!
Do you have colored pencils, gouache, watercolor, or other mediums on hand? Would you like to use them but lack confidence? No worries! You’ll learn how to express your creativity and beautify your pages effortlessly.
However, a word of caution when using paint in your journal. If the paper isn’t suitable, you may run into some issues.
Our **RĂŞverie journals** are specially designed for artists. With their thick, cold-pressed paper, they not only provide a beautiful texture but also handle paint exceptionally well. They are the perfect choice for watercolor. Get yours here!

Color Swatches
I love making swatches whenever I get new art supplies. It’s simple, pretty, and very useful: displaying all your colors on a page gives you a handy reference for future creations. For example, here’s a swatch I made with my Caran d’Ache Supracolor (water-soluble colored pencils).

Color Blocks
Create simple color blocks on your pages. You can then write journal entries, quotes, or any other ideas over them. This contrast adds a dynamic touch to your layout.

Tip: Use a white pen like the Uniball Signo for a change from black or blue ink.

Horizontal and Vertical Lines
Lines are your best friends when it comes to structuring your pages. Play with thickness and colors:
Thick Horizontal Lines

Regular Horizontal Lines

Vertical Lines

Gingham Pattern
Inspired by the classic checkered fabric pattern, gingham is created by layering horizontal and vertical lines. The intersections form subtle contrasts that bring your pages to life.

A Simple Frame
Sometimes, a simple frame is all you need to decorate a page. Outline your text with a solid-colored line.

Or use small patterns like hearts or stars.

Combine your frames with stickers for an extra decorative touch.

Embrace the Abstract
This is one of my favorite techniques, though I don’t use it as often as I’d like: creating abstract backgrounds for your pages. Let your creativity flow and switch up the designs from page to page. Just be mindful of your color and medium choices—lighter watercolor shades work best so you can still write over them.

Now It’s Your Turn!
As you can see, it’s absolutely possible to use paint, colored pencils, and other artistic tools in your journal—even if you don’t draw. These materials offer countless possibilities to enhance your pages in a creative way. Whether you opt for simple color swatches or abstract patterns, there are plenty of easy and effective techniques to personalize your journal.
